This bumblebee is a familiar garden visitor, dressed in bold stripes with a crisp white tail. With shorter tongues than some, they're drawn to open flowers like dandelions, thistles, and brambles. Queens rise early in spring, flying low through sunny meadows and hedgerows, often nesting in old rodent burrows. Living in small colonies of around 200, these ground-loving bees are gentle gardeners - carrying pollen from plant to plant, helping wildflowers and crops grow.
