Common carder bees wear a thick, fluffy coat of rich ginger that helps them collect pollen and stay warm. Over time, their fur fades in the sun to a soft golden hue. With longer tongues than many bees, they reach deeper flowers others skip, favouring clovers, vetches, and blooms with hidden nectar. That's why carder bees can be seen flying as late as November. Above ground, they weave soft nests from moss and grass. In a good year, two generations of queens and workers rise in turn, each carrying on the quiet labour of the nest.
